About QYA

“We should all have the right to live with the same dignity, opportunity and safety. It shouldn’t matter what anyones sexual orientation is.” - Cyndi Lauper

The Queer Youth Alliance is a youth-driven group in Prince Rupert, BC for Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Queer, Trans, and Questioning Youth, AND their Friends!!!

It can be a scary thing coming to your first meeting. Some people simply cannot muster the courage to come, for fear of friends (or non-friends) finding out and ridiculing them. The QYA is a group of supportive youth; youth meaning gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, AND STRAIGHT people, who want to give queer youth a safe place to go. This is a group of people that will accept you as you are and will not judge you, mock you, or call you the names you are so used to hearing every day.

Meetings consist of socializing, discussing political issues, gay rights, and watching movies.
Anyone is welcome to our meetings. However, we have a zero-tolerance policy for unpleasant behavior or negative comments.

It is a fact that gay youth are far more likely to attempt suicide than straight youth. If we can help just one person avoid the temptation, we will have fulfilled our purpose.

I picked up Xtra West this morning and there was good old Rupert on the cover headlines… Back when I was an awkward early 90’s nerd girl at PRSS this sort of thing did not and maybe could not have been there for me… I’m glad life is different for you kids. Good luck! Loved the parade photos!

I was pretty excited when my girlfriend brought the article home for me to read. As a former Ruperite (and PRSS student) I think it is so great that the community now has a resource like this.

Congratulations on all the hard work it must have taken to get this project going. This is a pretty awesome and exciting thing.

I am routing for you all! :)
