Hey all.

This page is an experiment - it’s open for discussion about topics relevant to Queer Youth in Prince Rupert. Please keep it clean (we’d like to keep the site!), don’t mention anyone by name, and email us at princerupertqya@yahoo.ca with any questions or concerns.

If you have the password already and want to talk planning for QYA events and such, go to the PLANNING tab instead.

Well I’m pretty stoked about going to the movie next Tuesday. And at PR!! Hope to see you all there.

I like this new discussion section. Hopefully we can get some good conversations going here.

I’m a little disappointed that I won’t be able to make the movie on Tuesday, but I have to be at the Performing Arts Centre for rehearsals.

    Have fun.

hey everyone, I’m hoping to be able to attend the planning meeting on Tuesday the 16th, but as the same happened for the pizza night, I might be busy with Work.

I’ll email it around anyway but I figured I could get some comments here first and start of the idea.

Since the School District has agreed to be so friendly with QYA and now that the District is at a disadvantage for Sex Ed. Classes (Jane Wilde has moved to Grand Forks, BC and her replacement has been promoted to Head Supervising Nurse Full Time at the Hospital) PERHAPS we can institue some form of COMPLETE Sexual Education Classes for the Highschools; be it through Peer educators (a welcomed idea in the past that just never got time to work out) or possibly Queer youth friendly sex educators.

BC’s Provincal Board brought up this major missing component at this Years Annual General Meeting and has informed me that if we would be willing to facilitate something like this they would be completely on board and help however they could (ie. supplies, volunteer training, etc.)

    What do you think?

I second Holliday’s suggestion. I think it’s a great idea and much needed. Perhaps we can put it onto the agenda for next week’s planning session?

sounds like a brilliant idea, let’s put some thought into it on Tuesday.

should we put more photos on the site?
    Make it more personal?

  7. Emilia October 30th, 2007 6:37 am

how do I go about getting an account on here?
there are some parts of the site that I’m not allowed on because it says I need to log in but I can’t because.. well because I don’t have an account.
    sorry for the redundency[sp?] there.

on a completely different note, I think we should set up a page for people to share stories about their expirience[s] with anything relating to sexual preference and gender identity. From figuring out you have a crush on your best friend to explaining the reasoning for transgendered folks
[I felt that this was actually quite an accomplishment, my brother’s eyes are a little more open than they were before but it’s a long story]

I think we all will find that we have a lot to say. And it would be great for people who are new to the QYA or are apprehensive about getting involved because they’ll be able to relate to the stories. Nothing brings people together like shared personal expirience! Amirite?

I like both Christine and Emilia’s ideas. I think getting more pictures up will be easier once we have more people attending the functions. Hopefully we’ll have better attendance at the movie next Monday.

I think that we would need a different webpage program(?) to do what Emilia suggests. Something along the lines of hackingthemainframe where there are pages for different discussion threads. If this were to happen, we would need more moderators to keep track of what is posted.

We should discuss both ideas at our next organizational meeting.

The new copies of Xtra West are here. If you want one let me know, paling@sd52.bc.ca. If someone from the college wants to take 5 or 6 there, that would be good too.

  10. foxpovey November 14th, 2007 11:54 am

Regarding the Xtra West copies, it would be great if someone (Hollie??) wanted to take some to Eddies News. I believe they told us before they’d keep a stack there every week. Pick them up from Paul.

  11. Holliday November 23rd, 2007 4:15 pm

Hey sorry I’ve been outta the loop the last little while. Someone let me know if next time the xtra west’s arrive that they need them picked up and i’ll definetly take care of it.

I appologise but as I’ve previously let others know I won’t be able to make the garage sale… If that’s still happening???

Oh and for the Christmas party… we should DEFINETLY do it the Friday December 7th!!! (because I’ve got a staff x-mas party on the 8th)… but if that doesnt work out for other people then don’t feel obligated to meet my request, I’ll understand :P

  12. foxpovey November 23rd, 2007 10:06 pm

Neither the garage sale or the Christmas Party are likely to be happening. There is a critical lack of participation: only two of us were at the last meeting. Time to regroup and hear new ideas. If folks who weren’t at the last event or meeting want to plan something, I don’t mean to discourage you. The QYA is still as full of potential and crucial as ever, but we need to be in the same room at the same time to talk about that. Perhaps someone can propose a new meeting.

Wouldn’t it be great if more of the people who work with youth had a better understanding about what youth were thinking? Here’s your chance to tell us! Options for Sexual Health, an organization that has clinics across BC offering sexual health services, sex ed programs and an information phone line (1-800 Sex Sense) is looking for 6 - 10 youth to participate in a “youth roundtable” about how they make decisions about the relationships they’re in.

We’re making a newsletter for Valentine’s Day (which also happens to be national Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Day) about youth and healthy relationships/decision-making. Excerpts from email discussions by the youth will appear in our next newsletter, which is distributed to clinics, doctors, members of Options for Sexual Health and other people who work with youth.

    We’re looking for:

    * 6 – 10 youth (approximately 12 – 16 years old, but possibly up to 18) from anywhere in BC
    * Diverse voices and backgrounds – queer youth (GLBTQ), a mix of males and females, from different areas of BC, etc.

    How it’ll work:

    * Youth will answer questions about relationships and dating that are asked by 2 facilitators (one guy, one woman, both in their late teens/early twenties) over an email list. Participants can respond to one another’s comments, and generally respond to the questions. It’s pretty much like an online forum, but will happen over email instead.
    * After a couple of weeks, the discussion will be wrapped up, and the facilitators will edit the content into a readable format for the newsletter.
    * Timeline: we’d like to begin the discussion as early as possible in January. The email discussion will run until Sunday, January 13th.
    * The identities of all the youth involved will be kept confidential – no identifying characteristics will be released in the article, other than their first names.
    * Some of the topics we want to cover are: body image, how you make decisions about dating, what you think a healthy relationship is, etc. (plus, we’re open to your ideas about what you think should be covered). None of the material will be sexually explicit.

    An added incentive:

    * Youth who participate will be given a movie pass as thanks for their contributions

    How to get involved:

    * Interested youth can contact Jessica Peart (Options for Sexual Health’s Manager of Executive Services) at jpeart@optbc.org or 604-731-4252 ext 237 for info on how to get involved.

    Hi Queer Youth of Rupert!

I wanted to let you know that I have seen your nomination for Xtra West’s Volunteers of the Year Award.
    Congratulations!
I went to high school in Rupert and spent a year semi-out there. Back in those days there wasn’t any Queer group; I am so thrilled you brave people have acomplished this. Keep up the good work - looking forward to this year’s Seafest pics!
